What is Adswood & Bridgehall?

Adswood is a suburb of Stockport in England in the Metropolitan Borough of Stockport, Greater Manchester.

The name Adswood is said to be derived from Adders wood. It is believed that during the reign of King Charles the area had been royal hunting grounds. Adswood has its own coat of arms, a snake wrapped around a tree, which is the emblem of the local Adswood Primary School.

The council housing estate in Adswood began in the 1920s with the building of Culver Road, situated at the back of the estate towards neighbouring Cale Green. The rest of the housing was built in the 1930s and 1940s. Earlier than this housing a farm and its buildings were on the land.

The Adswood & Bridgehall regeneration area is in the Davenport and Cale Green ward.

The area is predominately residential and covers 1.16 square kilometres. It is made up of two small neighbourhoods, which are both socially and economically isolated from the surrounding affluent residential and commercial areas and are further geographically isolated by railways lines. The area is 1.5 miles to the southwest of Stockport town centre.

There are approximately 4,700 residents in Adswood & Bridgehall. The area has a larger proportion of under 18 year olds (33.6%) than Stockport (22.8%). 95.8% of the residents are white.

Who is behind this website?

The online community named www.adswood.co.uk is run, maintained and designed by local residents of Knightsbridge Park in Adswood. Knightsbridge Park is a recent development of 107 residential units built by Lovell Partnerships Limited in 2006 within the Adswood area in Stockport. It includes parts of Rostherne Road, Goodwood Drive (ex Bognor Road), Ashburton Road, Alderley Way, Rostrevor Road and Bexhill Road.

This website was launched in Spring 2010 to help the residents of this development to communicate more easily between them. Very quickly, this place attracted more and more visitors and became the new online community for the entire Adswood estate.

We are now dedicated to become the online reference for the whole Adswood & Bridgehall area.

What is the purpose of this website?

People in Adswood & Bridgehall feel experience lower levels of community cohesion than the Stockport average and they are less satisfied with their area as a place to live. However, they are much more likely to say that they feel able to influence decisions that affect their area.

Our approach is to create a framework of conditions that help residents to be neighbourly when and if they want to be. This is the main reason why we have created this online space for interaction and dialogue and we hope that it can encourage neighbourliness.

We aim to provide a centralised source of updated news and information, covering all aspects of local life (business, shopping, education, entertainment, clubs and societies) to better inform the residents and visitors of events and activities taking place around the Adswood & Bridgehall area.

A real independent local community

We maintain this online community during our free time and we pay everything from our pockets. We do not receive money from anyone so we are 100% independent. We can say what we want to say and we can keep a true objectivity about local events and issues.
